After being chastised and harassed last week, I decided that it was time to face my fear and join the Tuesday night speed work group.
And guess what?
It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be! We did 3 - 1 mile intervals (some people, the crazy ones, did 4 intervals). I was a little worried about doing 4 whole laps without stopping, at a higher than normal rate of speed. But after I got out there I just followed the donut scent that was coming from Phil (aka notfast) and it was easy to just keep following him. And the fact that I knew Tim was on my heels, helped me to run a little faster. Okay, that last sentence was a lie. I actually ran faster than Tim because I thought it would be in my best interest to have the paramedic BEHIND me, rather than in front of me.
I'm still sorta shocked that I just kept going. After plugging the handy dandy Garmin in, I have discovered that my fastest lap was 2:01 and my slowest was 2:30. Actually, it sounds better to say my fastest average pace was 7:49 which is faster than I think I've run. Ever. And well, that just makes me the coolest chick I know (today anyway).
No, wait. The coolest chick today was Kerry (our running club President) who would lap me and say "Good job Amy". When she runs she looks so graceful and so fast at the same time, and she still had the energy to tell slow me that I was doing a good job even if I was just doing a mediocre job. Yes, she was the coolest today (actually her husband Dave was cool too and giving me attaboys, but I don't think he wants to be called the coolest "chick").
So now that I know that I can "do it" I guess I may make it a habit. Well, not starting next week because I've got standing orders for girls night, but starting the next Tuesday I guess I'll start making it happen! And well, that makes me happy. When we started our first lap I asked Tim "did someone say this was fun?" And now that it's all over with and I ran the fastest I ever have, I think it WAS actually FUN!
