10 Minute Miles

I don't do them. Since my injury, I have been run/walking at an 11:30 pace at best. I was disappointed at first, but now I have come to terms with the fact that this is what will help me cross the finish line in 24 days. (Yikes, yes 24 days!!!) At any rate, pre-injury I was averaging a 10:30 mile and thought I was awesome. Injury came and went and I've just been gliding along at this 11:30 pace...for all runs. I think it's part scaredy-catness and part...well, it's just all being scared. I'm comfortable at this pace. I feel like I could run forever. I've had a couple of short, solo runs that I've run at less than an 11 min mile, but they've been few. Why, you ask, am I talking about all of this???

Rewind to yesterday. 4 easy miles. Ran on base after work. It seems that Tuesday must be elite athlete day because there were only 3 other guys running the trail and they were literally running circles around me. It's a 5k trail and I was passed by one guy three times. The other 2 passed me twice. I didn't let it bother me. Because they didn't know that I had recovered from an injury, or that I had just started running on Oct 19, 2005, or that I used to pass the time by smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. They just didn't know. But had they known, I'm sure that would have thought that I was as awesome as I think that I am. With that being said, I was running SLOW and I just didn't care. It was a nice day, I had music, and I was just going to enjoy this run...because duh...I ran 15 miles on Sunday :)

Well, I get to the 2 mile turnaround and look down at my watch and it says 19:55...hmmm...I must have miscalculated...the distance. Did I start at the right place? Did I accidently stop my watch somewhere? What is going on? Oh well, I'll figure it out later...2 more miles to go...
Finally, get done...4 miles...being passed fast is that guying running?? And I look down at my watch...40:33. Well, that is just-not-right. What did I do to screw it up? I'll drive the route again, because I've only run it like 50 times and I could be wrong...Nope. I wasn't wrong. Exactly 4 miles. Sweet. Was like a little pre-marathon pick-me-up. Not that I am worried or anything, but it's good to know that my legs are getting back to their pre-injury state. 10.08 pace. Didn't expect that to happen....

In other unrelated news: T is out of town. I miss him terribly. What am I going to do when I have to leave in August for 3 freakin months???? I guess train, train, train so that my mind will be on other things. He just called. I told him I forgot to take the trash to the curb and they've already picked up on this street. He said "that's okay because you're not as trashy as me". Okie dokie.
